Hullmark Centre construction update

Hullmark Centre, a combined residential, retail and office space at Yonge and Sheppard, is starting to rise from the earth. It will be at grade early next year. The shoring and excavation is 100 per cent complete, says Tim Wiseman, Project Manager.

Over 16,000 m³ (more than 565,000 cubic feet!) of concrete has been poured so far at this three acre site. The centre will sit above the Yonge and Sheppard subway station, with direct indoor access. This has provided some challenges for the project. The south tunnel connection’s structural form work is now underway. For the north tunnel, shoring and excavation will be starting shortly.

“In order to build the north tunnel connection, we had to relocate the existing infrastructure,” says Wiseman. “That’s why it has lagged.”

The subway station is within road allowance, so shoring and excavation had to be done into road allowance. Which was “tricky at best” says Wiseman. Two northbound lanes had to be shut down, so work could only be done on the weekends.

There were many weather challenges in 2011, including the heavy rains in the spring. But Hullmark is progressing well and there will probably just be work during the day now. The purchasers in the south tower are expected to move in spring or summer of 2013. The north residential tower and office will be ready in 2014.
