The design of 101 Erskine – maintaining the neighbourhood feel of Yonge and Eglinton

“We wanted to make the building sophisticated and modern and have a striking quality from a distance,” says Paul Cravit, CS&P Architects Principal and lead designer of 101 Erskine. Cravit was also lead architect of the LEED® Gold certified North Toronto Collegiate Institute, built by Deltera.

101 Erskine will be making a dramatic impact in the Yonge and Eglinton area. But it’s been carefully designed as to not impose on or change the feel of this quaint uptown neighbourhood.

"The strong colouration of the building, the charcoal grey and white, creates a lot of visual interest," says Paul Cravit, lead architect of 101 Erskine.

“What we’re trying to do is create a neighbourhood scale with a memorable quality to the tower,” says Cravit. “There’s a structural piece on the 24th floor, the height of which is related to the apartment building next to it, the Beaux Properties building. The building has two tones to it, the dark and white, which helps with the jogs and shifts of the building. It helps visually lower the building and make it more contextual to the neighbourhood.”

That neighbourhood context is further emphasized with the base and entrance.

“The base of the building comes out with an elegant dark brick entrance with copper,” says Cravit. “It ties into the public walkway piece — a landscaped lane which is a pleasant way through the neighbourhood. There will also be a water feature when you look down the main walkway.”

The ten townhomes will also link the community to the streetscape and mediate the scale.

“And in the rear there’s a nice courtyard, an amenity space for the residents,” says Cravit. “And the sixth story rooftop terrace is visually linked, you can see the courtyard from the terrace. The terrace is also at a nice residential level, not way up in the air.”

Like Tridel’s The Republic, one block south, 101 Erskine has the dramatic cantilever balconies.

“The colours are very different, but there’s a certain consistency in the detailing [of the two communities],” says Cravit, who helped design the exteriors of both. “We’re not just plucking down towers on their own, there’s a certain sense of linkage.”

The Tridel Head Office presentation centre is now open for 101 Erskine. Visit us at 4800 Dufferin Street Entrance ‘B’ or call 416-480-0700 to learn more about this beautifully designed community. Hours are Monday to Friday, 11am – 7pm, and Saturday, Sunday & Holidays, 12pm – 6pm.
