From One Home to 90,000: How Tridel Has Shaped Toronto’s Skyline

From its early beginnings in 1934 to creating towers that define Toronto’s skyline, Tridel’s story is one of craftsmanship, innovation, and community. Discover how decades of thoughtful building have created over 90,000 homes and a lasting legacy across the city.

1961 marked a turning point in Toronto’s skyline, and in Tridel’s story. That year, Angelo DelZotto, eldest son of Jack DelZotto, the original founder of the company that would become Tridel, completed an apartment complex that would become the forerunner of today’s modern condominium.

It was more than a building; it was a bold statement of vision, craftsmanship and ambition, a signature that would define Tridel’s approach for decades to come.

Built for Life® Since 1934.

Tridel’s roots, however, go back even further. In 1934 Jack DelZotto built his first single-family home in Toronto, with a singular belief: every home was a foundation for life. Built with a dedication to quality, integrity, and attention to detail, these early single-family homes set the standard from the very beginning. What began as individual houses would grow into a bold ambition: to help shape the city itself. Fast forward, Jack’s sons - Angelo, Elvio, and Leo DelZotto - together with Harvey Fruitman expanded Tridel into high-rise construction, building condominiums in the GTA. Toronto has felt that influence ever since.

Leading Progress in the Industry

From that first apartment complex to today’s master-planned communities, Tridel has consistently been at the forefront of progress. Early on, the company embraced green building practices and sustainability, followed by the adoption of aluminum forming systems that improved construction efficiency and safety while pushing the industry forward. Over time, this commitment expanded to include a deeper focus on corporate social responsibility, safety, and a continued push toward net-zero performance. More recently, Tridel has advanced its efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion, being among the first in the industry to publish a Reconciliation Action Plan. But above all, and underpinning it every step of the way, Tridel’s commitment to progress has always been a commitment to people.

Recognition Through Excellence

Awards have followed naturally: Home Builder of the Year (BILD), Ontario Builder of the Year (OHBA), High-Rise Builder of the Year (Tarion), and Green Builder of the Year (BILD). Yet for Tridel, accolades are milestones, not endpoints. The true measure of success lies in the homes themselves, the communities they foster, and the lives they touch.

Communities Built for People

Tridel’s impact extends beyond buildings. We have long embraced the idea that communities matter as much as homes. Social responsibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and community building are embedded in our DNA. In 2023, Tridel published its first Reconciliation Action Plan, creating opportunities for Indigenous Peoples within the company and across its network. By focusing on people - residents, employees, and partners - Tridel ensures its communities foster health, happiness, and belonging, making the legacy deeply human.

A Legacy That Continues

Reflecting on nearly a century of growth, Jim Ritchie, President & CEO of Tridel, observes, "The DelZotto and Fruitman families paved the way for home building in Toronto, and we’re proud of the impact we’ve made over the last 90 years. Their foundations and values remain deeply engrained in the company today. That’s why we continue to be at the forefront of the industry."

Tridel’s legacy is measured not only in awards or accolades. It is seen in the 90,000+ homes where families grow and thrive, the thoughtful neighbourhoods shaped by planning and green space, and the enduring trust earned from homeowners over generations. From Jack DelZotto’s first house to Toronto’s skyline and beyond, Tridel has shown that building well is building a lasting, meaningful legacy.
