The Art of Westerly: Our Commitment to Community
Our Westerly site features an evocative, eight-panel celebration of community by Toronto-based artist Moe Pramanick. Known as Spaceship Lullaby, you can learn more about this unique wraparound art display below.
Community is at the center of everything we do at Tridel. From the designs we envision to the homes we build, we are committed to enriching lives and redefining how you connect with your neighbours, your environment, and the world outside your door. We partner with companies, like Hollyburn Properties, that share our values, and we support communities with socially and environmentally conscious designs and construction practices. We also engage in partnership programs that showcase local talents, values, and history.
We welcome you to witness this commitment to community when you visit the Westerly site, which we are building in collaboration with our colleagues at Hollyburn. Together, we and Hollyburn have closely partnered with STEPS and local artist Moe Pramanick to exhibit artwork inspired by students at the nearby Islington Junior Middle School.
Known collectively as Spaceship Lullaby, this exhibit began as a workshop conducted with students that asked, “What is Community?” Their insights provided inspiration for the eight illustrations in this exhibit, which spans over 2589 square feet of hoarding around Westerly.
Spaceship Lullaby incorporates a unique blend of art styles and influences and encourages viewers to participate in a celebration of community through the eyes of local children. Drawing on her experiences living in Toronto, Moe Pramanick explores the ways our nearness to one another elevates our feeling of safety, our commitment to reciprocity, and our willingness to struggle together.
The Westerly is located in Islington Village, noted for its many murals depicting scenes from the neighbourhood’s past and present. We and Hollyburn are proud to add Spaceship Lullaby to this tradition as a moving, albeit temporary, glimpse into the Village’s exciting future.
Spaceship Lullaby in Eight Panels
Each of the eight panels in Spaceship Lullaby can be viewed on its own or as components of a larger series. Across these panels, the artist, Moe Pramanick, asks us to imagine what we can achieve as a community.
In this image, two people are seated, facing each other, and engaging in an interpretative act of imagination. One holds a plant representing stories, ideas, and inventions. The other holds water and sunshine, the foundation for this plant’s growth.
Here, we can see representations of our solar system above and the oceans and lands below – the celestial community all of us share.
This is a visual representation of community as the vital bond that keep all of us connected in good times and bad.
People of various genders and backgrounds reach high above the cityscape, a depiction of the ways our communities are literally shaped by the people who live in them.
Solitude is an important part of community. It helps us reflect and return to the company of others reinvigorated, a point the next two panels help reinforce.
Communication is at the core of community, but what happens when words escape us? In this image, the struggle with overwhelming emotions is dramatized against a backdrop of towering mountains. Resolution is found in the next panel.
In the penultimate panel, we can see the healing power of solitude as it re-establishes our connection with nature, the great universal community we explored in Panel 2.
When we have somewhere to live, our lives are fuller and happier. We feel empowered because we know we do not have to face our challenges alone. The series’ final piece reaffirms the importance of community in sustaining us and making us stronger.
